Technology for One Welfare
This PATHWAYS webinar discusses modern tools and strategies facilitating change in the EU’s livestock sector. Focused on aligning with the EU One Health policy, the ‘one welfare’ concept recognises the interconnections between animal welfare, human wellbeing and the environment.
Dairy in agroforestry system for self-sufficiency in protein-based feed | PATHWAYS Practice Hub
In this video, Florin Burzo, Executive Director of the Țibleș-Someș-Meleș Agricultural Cooperative, shares the inspiring journey of bringing together specialists, farmers, and processors to link forage diversity in semi-natural grasslands with milk quality. Located in a mountainous region of Romania, this Practice Hub has been looking at how traditional practices, natural grazing, and innovative approaches are enhancing milk quality and benefiting both the environment and local communities. The cooperative has over 150 small farmer members and collects 8,000-10,000 litres of high-quality milk daily.
PFLA research and results from SEEGSLIP project | PATHWAYS seminar
In this seminar, Nikki Yoxall, Research Manager and Regional Facilitator, presents the work of Pasture for Life, and Laurence Smith, co-coordinator for PATHWAYS, presents some results of the SEEGSLIP project, which sought to evidence the practices of Pasture for Life Association producers and farmer members using holistic, system-based approaches. More information about the project results can be accessed here.
Past impacts and current policies on livestock in Europe | PATHWAYS seminar
In this presentation, Elsa Régnier (IDDRI) and Dr Nina Röhrig (University of Reading) summarise findings of work package 2, discussing the impacts of past EU policies on different sustainability dimensions of the livestock sector, and assessing the current and potential future EU policy framework for livestock. The related report serves as a starting point for the development of a framework to evaluate the sustainability of livestock systems, future scenarios and policies. which can be accessed here.
100% pasture-fed cow-calf dairy systems | PATHWAYS Practice Hub
This dairy cooperative focuses on animal welfare and harmonious integration of livestock into its farming systems. It has developed own voluntary standards beyond EU/Demeter organic’s which among other factors underline the importance of mother-calf-rearing systems.
Management for maximisation of carbon sequestration in pasture | PATHWAYS Practice Hub
13 grazing dairy farmers in West of France were gathered to demonstrate the benefits of grassland systems in terms of mitigating climate change, maintaining biodiversity, improving the quality of farmers’ livelihood as well as generational renewal in agriculture.
Quality assured production system on high nature value semi-natural pastures | PATHWAYS Practice Hub
Naturbeteskött is an NGO with members who are farmers, consumers and industry representatives. They have an interest in producing, marketing and consuming beef and lamb grazing on semi-natural grasslands. Therefore, this practice hub showcases the benefits of grazing on high nature value (HNV) grasslands and promotes quality assured pasture beef and lamb through existing third-party certification.
More-from-less dairy systems | PATHWAYS Practice Hub
7 dairy farmers from the South of Sweden decided to work together on communicating their sustainable practices towards the consumers. Written materials were prepared that explain Swedish modern dairy farming as well as its impact on the environment.
Storyline development | PATHWAYS Seminar
Dr. Pierre-Marie Aubert, Director of Agriculture & Food Policies at IDDRI describes the five storylines that were set for the PATHWAYS project to think about the future of the EU livestock sector and explains the key characteristics of each Storyline.
Precision Farming : Enhancing Livestock Management
Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) integrates various technologies into cohesive systems to monitor livestock in real-time and on an individual basis. It utilizes single or multiple tools to ensure precise monitoring, allowing farmers to track animal health, behaviour, nutrition and environmental conditions with accuracy and immediacy, in both intensive and extensive systems. This approach has the potential to optimize farming practices, enhance animal welfare, and contribute to more efficient and sustainable livestock production.
Farmer Practice Hub Pitches for Sustainable Food
PATHWAYS designs future scenarios for sustainable livestock husbandry and food systems by facilitating dialogues with farmers in Practice Hubs all over Europe.
In these national Practice Hubs, farmers discuss ideas and innovations, are given the option of testing innovations in Living Labs and feed their ideas to other stakeholders from farm to fork to support sustainable livestock production and consumption.
Less Is More: A Policy Debate for Sustainable Food
Given the ongoing Animal Welfare legislation revisions (transportation questions) + Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) (postponed past 2024 elections), PATHWAYS is de-polarizing the debate around food and agriculture: what is at stake, how to get industry leaders to implement greater sustainability measures, how to move towards less is more models of production, and address the challenges of implementing food sufficiency and climate resilience across Europe.
Towards Climate-Smart Livestock Systems
Livestock production clearly contributes to climate change, but it is also affected by changing climates. Nowhere is the stake higher than in Sub-Saharan Africa, where livestock keepers are on the frontline, already grappling with the harsh realities of climate change. With a focus on combining scientific data collection and solution-led field research on climate-smart livestock production, join us for an in-depth discussion with leading experts.
A Holistic Approach for Sustainable Food Systems
Pietro Goglio from the University of Perugia, Italy, explores the holistic approach employed in the PATHWAYS project, the importance of agronomy in addressing livestock-crop interactions and how PATHWAYS is employing principles of circularity for enhanced sustainability in livestock systems.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Livestock: Measuring to Modelling
The livestock farming sector has been in the limelight for its outsize contributions to climate change: in the EU, it makes up more than half of methane emissions. Studying and measuring these emissions can be used to build models, which can illustrate a sustainable path forward for European agriculture.
Trade-Offs for the Future of Livestock Husbandry
In view of making livestock husbandry more sustainable, Catherine Pfeifer explains the need of evaluating trade-offs between efficiency, environmental footprint, and animal welfare.
Characterising Livestock Systems in Europe
To make livestock husbandry more sustainable in Europe we first need to understand the variety of livestock systems that exist there. Eléa Bailly-Caumette from FiBL explains the value of mapping and characterising livestock systems and how this can be done.
Towards Inclusive and Sustainable Food Systems
Jenny Yngvesson from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences provides a strong message for fostering collaboration, co-creation, inclusivity and a more holistic approach to food systems, plus a simple description of One Welfare as a sister concept to One Health.
Farmers Key for a Food Revolution
Through its participatory approach, Farmer Facilitation Lead Jessica Stokes explains how PATHWAYS Practice Hubs are engaging farmers for a revolution of the food system.
Supporting Livestock System Innovation
Highlighting the pressures on current food systems, PATHWAYS co-coordinator Laurence Smith explains how PATHWAYS is a solution space for innovations in livestock systems.
Consumer Trust and a Sustainable Livestock Sector
PATHWAYS co-coordinator and animal welfare expert, Harry Blokhuis, explains why addressing welfare and other sustainability factors is critical for building consumer trust and the longevity of the livestock sector.
