PATHWAYS Early Career Immersion at the University of Reading – A Personal Reflection

The PATHWAYS Early Career Immersion Programme (ECIP) is designed to give young researchers hands-on experience in new academic settings, offering them the chance to broaden their skills, build international networks, and discover fresh perspectives in their field. Read Selene’s entry below:

Thanks to the PATHWAYS Early Career Immersion Programme, I had the opportunity to spend time at the University of Reading in April 2025. I collaborated with one of the project coordinators, Prof. Laurence Smith, and his team, contributing to project activities and deepening my understanding of the local context.

The aim of this visiting period was to advance my research on the socio-economic sustainability of livestock value chains. Working closely with the Reading group not only supported my methodological development but also allowed me to connect with relevant UK stakeholders, a key step in my ongoing work.

This experience also gave me the chance to explore new research perspectives, engage in meaningful dialogue with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, and immerse myself in a university environment that values interdisciplinary thinking and strong societal connections. What made this experience truly special were the people: generous with their time, open to discussion, and passionate about their work. I’m deeply grateful for every conversation, shared idea, and moment of discovery. Thank you to Laurence and the entire Reading team.
